20621. India’s DNA COVID vaccine is a world first – more are coming
- The ZyCoV-D vaccine heralds a wave of DNA vaccines for various diseases that are undergoing clinical trials around the world.
- India has approved a new COVID-19 vaccine that uses circular strands of DNA to prime the immune system against the virus SARS-CoV-2.
- It is proof of the principle that DNA vaccines work and can help in controlling the pandemic, says Peter Richmond, a paediatric immunologist at the University of Western Australia in Perth.
- RNA vaccines were quicker to show strong immune responses in clinical trials; they have now been delivered to hundreds of millions of people around the world.
- ZyCoV-D was developed by Indian pharmaceutical firm Zydus Cadila, headquartered in Ahmedabad. On 20 August, India’s drug regulator authorized the vaccine for people aged 12 and older.
- Both DNA and mRNA vaccines have been under development since the 1990s, says Weiner. The challenge for DNA vaccines is that they need to make it all the way to the cell nucleus, unlike mRNA vaccines, which just need to get to the cytoplasm, says Jameel.
- Zydus Cadila says the trial is still under way and it will submit the full analysis for publication shortly. The company says the first doses will start to be administered in India in September and it plans to produce up to 50 million doses by early next year.

- In an affidavit dated 26 June, the Centre had told the Supreme Court that a total of 135 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccines will be made available to the citizens between August and December.
- Meanwhile, Russian COVID-19 vaccine Sputnik's single-dose jab Sputnik Light has received Drugs Controller General of India's (DCGI) nod to conduct phase-three bridging trials in India. The first tranche, manufactured by Panacea Biotec, has already been sent for quality and safety validation.
- The cumulative doses administered in the country so far under the nationwide vaccination drive has reached 75.89 crore according to the health ministry. So far, 18 percent of adults have been double-jabbed and 58 percent are single-jabbed
- In June, the government had told the Supreme Court that 1.35 billion doses will become available between August and December. It wants the entire adult population covered by December. About 1.8 billion doses are needed to vaccinate all eligible adults in India.
20623. PM-DevINE Scheme To Boost Cancer Care In Northeast India
- An initial allocation of Rs 1,500 crore has been made for PM-DevINE for the year 2022-23 and one of the major projects identified for starting during the year is ‘Establishment of dedicated services for the management of paediatric and adult haematolymphoid cancers in North-East India’, to be located at Bhubaneswar Borooah Cancer Institute (BBCI), Guwahati, at an estimated cost of Rs 129 crore.
- A new scheme ‘Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for North-East’ (PM-DevINE) was included in the Union Budget 2022-23 to be implemented through the North-Eastern Council, Ministry of Development of the North-Eastern Region, with the objective fund infrastructure in the region.
- The initiative is expected to provide a boost to cancer care in the region given that in the last 11 years, 3,855 childhood and adult haematolymphoid cancer patients reported to BBCI for treatment.

20624. Kathua set to become J-K’s bamboo industry hub
- Kathua has seen the rise of 19 bamboo units of cooperative societies, of which eight were sanctioned during the financial year 2021-22, thanks to the region’s distinct topography and geo-climatic conditions that offer an environment conducive for bamboo plants,
- The Shivalik range of hills along the Jammu-Pathankot highway in Kathua has a good concentration of bamboo plants. It has immense potential for generating income and employment in the district.
- Under the financial support scheme, the department has so far opened 19 bamboo units of cooperative societies, including eight during the financial year 2021-22, The department has sent nine local bamboo artisans to Assam for a 21-day capacity building and skill development training in bamboo craft.
20625. Jammu: Govt Medical College, Tata hospital sign MoU to develop modern cancer care facilities
- Jammu and Kashmir, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tata Memorial Hospital for academic and technical collaboration for developing ultra-modern tertiary cancer care facilities. The MoU was signed in the presence of Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha
- Sinha said that the Union Territory (UT) government is committed to the goal of ‘health for all’ and promoting social equality through new healthcare projects. He said that the augmented facilities contribute towards the further strengthening of the healthcare system.
- The MoU with Tata Memorial Hospital for academic and technical collaboration will help in developing ultra-modern tertiary cancer care facilities and technical expertise for faculty, paramedical staff and integration of the cancer institute into the national cancer grid, Tata Memorial Centre, Sinha observed.
20626. For first time buyers, J&K govt announces 50% remission on stamp duty
- Jammu and Kashmir government has decided to give 50 percent remission on stamp duty for all first time real estate buyers.
- The decision is aimed at giving a boost to the real-estate sector in Jammu and Kashmir and motivating the new buyers to participate in the market. The rebate will be applicable for two years.
- It is also expected to provide momentum to property sale and registration by making the purchase of property attractive and affordable.
20627. Jammu and Kashmir Schools: NEP 2020 to be implemented from April onwards
- Jammu and Kashmir administration will be the National Education Policy, NEP 2020 from April 1 onwards. The decision comes after a meeting chaired by the Advisor to the LG of J&K, Rajeev Rai Bhatnagar was conducted.
- he meeting was conducted with Anita Karwal, School Education and Literacy Department Secretary and Arun Kumar Mehta, Chief Secretary to discuss the implementation of NEP 2020 and to resolve any operational issues being faced by the School Education Department. As per a PTI report, various programmes and initiatives will be implemented in the J&K education system from April onwards.
- Apart from these programmes, additional funding has also been provided for the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan Scheme. An additional Rs 259 crores will come from the Finance Department along with the initial Rs 28.1 crores appointed to the Union Territory. This will enable the school education department to submit the utilisation certificate of entire fund of Rs 464 crores to the government within one week.

- भारत ने जनवरी 2021 में देश के भीतर टीकाकरण की शुरुआत के साथ ही अन्य मुल्कों को मेड इन इंडिया टीकों को उपलब्ध कराने की भी शुरुआत की. अपने को दुनिया का दवाखाना बताने की जुगत में वैक्सीन मैत्री कार्यक्रम के तहत अब तक (8 मई 2021 शाम 6 बजे तक के आकंडों अनुसार) 94 देशों को कोरोना टीकों की आपूर्ति की गई.
- इस अभियान के तहत अब तक 6.63 करोड़ टीके मुहैया कराए गए जिसमें अनुदान, व्यवसायिक खरीद और WHO के कोवैक्स कार्यक्रम में अंशदान के तौर पर दिए गए टीके शामिल हैं. इसमें बड़ा हिस्सा 3.57 करोड़ टीकों का बिक्री के तौर पर है, जबकि 1.98 करोड़ टीके कोवैक्स कार्यक्रम के लिए दिए गए. अनुदान के तौर पर 1.07 करोड़ टीके भारत ने दिए
- विदेश मंत्रालय के अनुसार बांगलादेश, नेपाल, श्रीलंका, भूटान, म्यांमार, मालदीव, मॉरीशस जैसे पड़ोसी मुल्कों को टीके मुहैया कराने के पीछे तर्क यही था कि भारत के साथ अधिक आवाजाही वाले करीबी मुल्कों में भी टीकाकरण को मदद दी जानी चाहिए. ताकि बीमारी भारत की दहलीज पर न बढ़ती रहे. इस सूची में पाकिस्तान को छोड़कर अधिकतर सार्क के पड़ोसी हैं.
